Dominique Defoe Instagram – Every woman I know has a soulful and deep attachment to the ocean and I think it’s because the ocean is every woman’s mother. The steadiness in the way she carves the Earth without apology, not once asking for permission in the space she takes up. Her ferocity, her unwillingness to let go of the sand, her playfulness, the treasures she leaves behind. I have always loved her turmoil and unpredictablility. How you can walk in the shallows and suddenly find yourself falling into a depth – the way it’s startling and shocking how warm waters quickly turn cold once you overstep her boundaries.
In a world that is run by the force of men, women understand the water. The healing, the destruction. Two seemingly opposing forces trapped into one body, but I worship the expansiveness of her. The urge to protect and the urge to defend. The desire for peace and the demand for justice. She reminds me these are not opposing forces, they are one and the same. The darkness and the depth protect the light and that’s what the ocean unapologetically intertwines.
Women recognize the depths and dark they protect their own truths in. Forever keeping parts of ourselves hidden in fear they will be exploited, that we will have our words turned against us – pointed at as monstrous without allowing us a chance to give a reason. The ocean can be terrifying but still we return, she is not afraid of the threat of her own unknown, she does not silence her anger, she brings it to the light.
Everytime I am scared to speak up, this is what I remember: in the dark parts of the ocean and the woman, the most exquisitely powerful parts hide. So I come to the shore. To witness her freedom, her commitment to wildness and gentle. The uninhibited way she takes up space on the beach and leaves on her own time. She cannot be controlled, the ocean reminds me that neither can I.
