Emily Swallow Instagram – Is there a better place to be on Star Wars Day than at a fan convention? The joy was absolutely electric. However, we all know that, no matter how boisterous and confident we may seem on the outside, there could be shadows lurking beneath the surface that no one knows but we ourselves. On #thisisthewaywednesday, I want to tell you about a group of fans I met who walk The Way in a real, practical, uplifting way that was truly a day-to-day endeavor. They’d been talking online for a year, and this convention was their first in-person meeting. Between them, they knew they were dealing with severe social anxiety, a seizure disorder and other physical and emotional difficulties that might very well keep many people home in isolation. But they also had something else in common: a desire to trust each other, to practice vulnerability and to support each other. I saw them multiple times through the weekend in various states of joy and exhaustion, and I heard how they navigated tricky moments including panic attacks. At the end of the convention, they were tired and ready for rest, but they were SO joyful that they’d had the experience and stuck with each other (and with themselves) through it all. I am continually inspired by the way all of you lift each other up even with a strength you didn’t know you had. When we are acting in service to someone we love, we realize we could probably stand to show ourselves that same love, gentleness and courage. This is the Way. P.S. Emily Swallow Instagram – She was one of the classiest dames I knew, and also one of the goofiest. She would have been 104 today, but we said goodbye to her just shy of her 97th birthday. She was a ham, hated to be seen without her hair and makeup done (she was not happy about me filming this) but LOVED seeing how many people liked my Facebook posts about her. Grandma, thank you for the lessons you taught me, the boundless love you gave me and the faith you displayed. We miss you. #grandma #thegreatestgeneration #happybirthday
