"My son doesn't differentiate between female and male superheroes. It's all about their capabilities, their power, their personality, what they contribute and how cool they are. When I was growing up, it wasn't like that at all; if you asked a little boy what superhero they would want to be, there is no way he would say Wonder Woman. She was so sexualized and such the embodiment of male fantasies of a woman, that a boy could instinctively know there was a weakness there, and that he wanted no part of that. So that's really exciting for me to be a part of." (Excerpt from @amazingmagazine cover article, Issue #3, avail to order now! Link in bio.) Evangeline Lilly Instagram – I have loved Sarah Polley since seeing Away From Her starting Julie Christie, so much so that I once crashed an audition for Take This Waltz just to tell her so.

My agent had secured me an audition but based on the script I asked in advance if there was any point in my auditioning if I wasn’t willing to do my own nudity. The answer came back, ‘no’. There was no point. The role required it. …And I wasn’t willing.

I intentionally mislead my agent to have her keep the audition open and showed up on the day anyway. I was so afraid of wasting Sarah’s time, I wanted so much to be respectful and humble, that I stepped into the room, explained that l wasn’t willing to do nudity and confirmed that that discluded me from the role, and then told Sarah what a fan I was of her work and left. I didn’t even make space for her and I to speak, to have a conversation. I was too Christian, too Canadian, too worried about making her unhappy with me for highjacking her audition to “trouble her further”. One of the many regrets my misplaced humility brought me in my career.

Since then I found her writing on the #MeToo movement to be the best piece of articulate truth I had read in ages. It moved me and made me feel seen.

And, now, Women Talking.

Sarah Polley has a gift. She knows story – how to craft words, sounds, and pictures into meaning and evolution. That is so much harder than it seems and is so rare today. I consider her a gift.
