I thought moving back to Germany will finally feel like my name won’t be so foreign anymore, and yet people here are still baffled by the fact that they just met someone who’s name only fits those who already have gray hair and have survived the war. I can’t even count how many times someone has told me here that I don’t look anything like my name. 👵🏻 For those wondering, its a pretty old german girls name which was popular around a century ago. Probably equivalent to names like Remedios (my lola) in the Philippines. Now, do I get annoyed by my name? Absolutely not. I like how I get to somehow break stereotypical barriers and carry the name beyond its expected life span and I hope it will continue to live on without automatically thinking of a blonde viking built grumpy woman with a unibrow (okay fine, I’ll admit I plucked mine 😬😜) It isn’t for everyone, and that resonates with me. ☺️
I wanted to list down a few facts about THIS Helga, but my migraine had other plans so I’ll leave you with this for now:
Helga – derived from Old norse meaning “the holy/sacred one” “Divine woman” ✨
Reminder to live life according to what will allow you to grow into who and what YOU want to be, what will make YOU happy, and who YOU are meant to be. The mistakes and risks you’ll take are yours and yours to learn and better yourself from. You’ll be alright. 😘
