Keely Cat Wells Instagram – Today, we commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act and 33rd Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act at the White House!
We celebrate the formidable activists and advocates who have come before us – we are where we are because of their relentless dedication to creating a more equitable world.
And WOW, what an incredible way to kick-start Disability Employment Awareness Month! @_making_space__
@selmablair delivered a amazingly powerful, memorable speech, introduced Biden and honoured the late and great, Judy Heumann @theheumannperspective.
And while we celebrate the progress today, there are many, many issues that need urgent attention including:
Elimination of subminimum wage:
In more than 30 states, Disabled people can legally be paid less than minimum wage.
Marriage equality:
If a Disabled person is receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), or Medicaid, their benefits can be reduced or revoked upon marriage.
Safe and equitable travel:
Disability Activist, Engracia Figueroa, died three months after United Airlines broke her custom wheelchair – and sadly this is only one of many stories that showcases be in equities that still exist.
Authentic and increased media, TV & film representation:
Of the 4.2% of Disabled people represented in film & TV it is estimated 95% of those roles are portrayed by non-disabled talent. And in advertising the stat stands at 0.9% of disability representation, and even worse behind the camera.
The full 193 members states of the United Nations to implement anti- discrimination policies:
Only 45 countries have anti-discrimination and other disability-specific laws.
Thanks to the force that is the disability community, the world is a better place for everybody.
