“Looking at the world, every time there are militaries involved in a coup, things don’t go well. However, what our young militaries did in the 25th of April in Portugal is nothing less than remarkable”. These are the words of Maria de Medeiros, the writer and actress who put all his soul in “Capitães de Abril”, a co-production that recreated the steps of the “carnation revolution” in 1974.
Production crew stopped many busy streets in Lisbon with authentic tanks and hundreds of extras to film in the exact same spots where the revolution happened 25 years before. In some cases, matching iconic photos from that day. João Pedro Ruivo, assistant director, played a crucial role in coordinating all the action with Lisbon municipality, because not every road was ready to support the chaimite’s weight. But they still pulled it off with incredible detail.
I revisited the locations, this time to frame a fictional Salgueiro Maia (played here by Italian Stefano Accorsi), Lobão (by spanish Fele Martínez) and Joaquim de Almeida (Gervásio). Rita Durão plays the soldier’s girlfriend at the station.
