Misty Copeland Instagram – What an honor to have my pancaked pointe shoes in the @smithsonian 🩰 Did you know Black and Brown dancers will pancake their shoes (usually with over the counter foundation) to match their skin color? It’s customary in ballet to create a long line from your leg to your shoe, however the traditional “European pink” shoes aren’t the right color for many Black and Brown ballerinas. Only recently have companies begun to provide colors of all shades but there is always room for more inclusivity!
