Raising a multilingual child isn’t easy, especially when you don’t speak the language yourself. But don’t let the challenge dissuade you – it is absolutely possible for children to learn languages that are not spoken by both or one parent!
It was so important to Derek and I that Theo speak both his heritage languages, and we went with the OPOL (one parent, one language) method where I speak to him in Spanish and Derek in Vietnamese.
But, I am so grateful that we discovered @mommyandmevietnamese because Ms. Tran brings parents along on the learning journey too. Now, we are both learning Vietnamese together and it’s a fun bonding experience for the two of us. Her videos not only teach us about Vietnamese language but culture, history, and traditions.
It brings me such pride to see Theo so connected to his Vietnamese heritage and Ms. Tran is a huge part of that. A huge thank you to the @mommyandmevietnamese community for enriching the lives of so many families. And to those parents struggling or doubting themselves, we see you! There are so many resources out there to help you and your children on their language journey. Hang in there – it’s so worth it !!!
