Phoebe Robinson Instagram – When I was asked to interview my friend/mentor Bono at a private book party (hosted by @Bloombergdotorg) celebrating his NYT memoir “Surrender,” I thot to myself, “In my book club, we all getting half chubs,” hence me serving body-ody-ody in a Hershey’s chocolate bar 🍫 wrapping. Jokes aside, this was legit one of the best days of my life. ⠀ Like thirteen year old me would’ve geeked over the opportunity and also fluffed out her Civil Rights era banyang. Seriously, when I was younger I looked I could’ve been in what was originally the Little Rock Ten, but alas I missed it all because I overslept the night before, so Nine it was! ANYWAY! The point is sometimes you dream of and hope for and manifest certain things, but the universe has a way of surprising you with even more when you surrender to it. ⠀ To kiki with a person whose music and philanthropy has meant so much to my life was a dream come true. To hear the way he speaks of and writes about Ali, his wife of 40 years moved me to tears. The way his band mates – Edge, Adam, & Larry – have bettered him in ways that he’s long known and ways he’s still discovering is touching without being overly sentimental. And to watch him take his passions seriously in one breath and then also take the piss out of himself the next is a masterclass in authenticity. He’s a thoroughly self-possessed person, which is probably the most beautiful thing about him. ⠀ So thanks, B, for the pleasure of your friendship, the gift of your generosity, and welcoming me deeper into the @red family by having me join the Advisory Board (I know B said Creative Council, but it’s the Advisory Board). I can’t wait to get to work and help the debilitating presence HIV/AIDS still has in this world. You, (RED), and so much more continue to make this the ride of a lifetime.
