Samyuktha Viswanathan Instagram – NYC brings out a different side of me. Something more authentic, genuine and happier. It makes me want to sing out this song loud as I walk the roads. It is freedom, liberating, and even the tough parts and the pain comes with a rainbow at the end of it. Ever since I moved back, I’ve been trying to live that side of me no matter where I am. And four years later, I still haven’t fully figured it out. Society, hate, trolls and the pressure to live confined in a box is stifling. I stopped trying to break through and bent under the pressure instead.
I love this city, I love my people, ‘Madras is an emotion’ is true. I’ve always been proud of being Tamilian, so the flak I get for my accent/pronunciation sometimes does hurt, but only because of the feeling of invalidation that comes with it. I want to be my free-er self here and I’m a little disappointed in myself that I let the confines get to me. I also know many of my peers/friends who feel similarly but it’s hard to put into words. So here’s to finding the courage and thick skin to be who you truly are, no matter where you are and what people say ✨
