Sara Watkins Instagram – 1/3 I filmed this in December when I realized I was having to learn-how-to-learn some of these more challenging new bits of @nickelcreek music. Sometimes I feel like since I’ve been a fiddler for a while I “should” be able to just play whatever I want without too much trouble. Or I get embarrassed when I have to do really foundational work to truly get a handle on what I’m trying to do. But that’s where the first victories are! I’m SO grateful to have had teachers and mentors who taught me to break things down. WAY DOWN. This clip is from a day back in December when I was preparing for our first shows in the UK. This is the first of three clips I made working on this new @nickelcreek tune called “Going Out.” I wasn’t able to sing while playing and then I realized I wasn’t even comfortable with the *rhythm of the vocal part. So I decided first to work on the rhythm and then worry about notes later. I didn’t need sheet music for the tune but found it helpful to *see where the vocal rhythm fell in relation to the fiddle melody, so I wrote both parts out together and that was my gateway to this clip of early progress. | Posted on 06/Mar/2023 02:52:58
