I loved seeing the dreams of so many designers play out on the runway.
I loved showing up.. and dancing for @4kinship and @internationalmuseumofdance ✨
I spent my teenage years using fashion as a way to communicate who I was and who I wanted the world to see.
I remember wearing moccasins on the red carpet and my beads just a decade ago and how it was always seen as handicraft. I spent so much time justifying my decision adorn myself with my culture.
That is a totally different reality from what the youth are seeing and experiencing today.
We are still fighting to be seen and heard…but standing on a different foundation.
We have indigenous fashion weeks happening across Canada and the USA now; and the New York Times covering the influence.
We are seeing mainstream designers start collaborating with us, instead of appropriating us.
We are here. We have always been on the cutting edge – but credit has not always been given where it is due.
I am so excited for this moment.
I love fashion.
I love the physical expression of storytelling.
This has always been a part of who we are.
