Susan Kelechi Watson Instagram – Comedy is my medicine. So during the pandemic when my soul needed it most I was drawn to a gem. I found #Brooklyn99 on streaming and was wholely healed by the comic stylings of the great Andre Braugher. I watched the series from beginning to end and laughed. Oh honey I laughed OUT LOUD. The entire cast is so wonderful but Sir Andre Braugher, we can all agree, is an acting lesson. Some will quote homicide: life on the street, some glory or some other of his great dramatic perfomances. But for me, it was his Captain Holt. He wasnt just funny. He was a lesson in comedy and timing. And for a girl who despeartely needed the binge, he was the gift that kept on giving. So, earlier this year, when I found out I would be working with my new comedic hero…my pandemic panacea… I was overjoyed.

The time I was blessed to share with Andre showed me that his incredible talent as an actor was equally matched by his wisdom, intelligence and sense of humor. It was only surpassed by his love for his family…his adoration of his sons and his wife of 30 yrs, Ami, who he still lovingly called his bride. His perspective on life gave me hope. It inspired me.

And maaan, backstage, we had a time. I feel we became friends. At least thats how Ill remember it. An acting hero became my friend. I suppose one of the crueler truisms in life is that sometimes what you think is just the start is actually the whole journey… and it is wholely up to us to remember to cherish those moments, in the moment.

Rest in the sweetest peace, Andre. Im holding space in my heart for your beautiful family.
