Back in 2004, Maren Levinson (slide one) and a small group of creative minds got together and asked 20 talented photographers from the art and editorial world to capture the rise and fall of the internet for a publication called BIG_54: San Francisco. Fast forward to today, twenty years later. Given the significant changes happening in our world, what are these well-known and diverse artists from the Bay Area focusing their lenses on? These brand new perspectives from 22 photographers showcase our picturesque yet complex post-pandemic surroundings. SF_retake beautifully frames these views in the context of the original BIG_54 publication, which you can also see on display. Its the brainchild of Maren once again and my contribution is an abstract picture of the Bay Bridge (slide 2) Come join us at the opening reception and book signings SATURDAY , May 4th – We’ll be there from 2pm to 5pm. ⏰️ 50 Scott Street in SF. Meet Hettie Judah. I could call her a curator. I could call her an author. But I think of her as a polymath and a changemaker. It was Hettie who included my MOTHERLOAD work in the ACTS OF CREATION exhibition which will be touring for over a year in the UK. She wrote the ACTS OF CREATION book too, which will be published by @thamesandhudson on 4 July (UK / Europe) and @thamesandhudsonusa on 3 September (USA /Canada). In the new book, motherhood is addressed in the broadest sense – as an idea, a myth, an imposition, a source of longing or dread. The book covers broader territory than the exhibition, with chapters looking at the mother as an art historical subject and the mother as an emblem of devotion (or horror). She also is a mother of two and following publication of her 2020 study on the impact of motherhood on artists’ careers, she worked with a group of artists to draw up the manifesto How Not To Exclude Artist Parents, now available in 16 languages. In 2022, together with Jo Harrison, Hettie co-founded @ArtWorkingParents Alliance – a supportive network and campaigning group for curators, academics, gallerists, technicians, educators and others working in the arts. Find out more and join the network here: [email protected] A supporter of Arts Emergency she has mentored artists and students through a variety of different schemes. As a broadcaster she can be heard (and sometimes seen) on programs including BBC Radio 4’s Front Row and Art That Made Us. Recent books include How Not To Exclude Artist Mothers (and other parents) (Lund Humphries, 2022) and Lapidarium: The Secret Lives of Stones (John Murray, London, 2022/ Penguin, NY, 2023). STONES! Stones have secret lives and I only believe it because of Hettie’s book. Can’t wait to find a way to use Lapidarium in a conversation. 🤯 Slide One: Lovely Portrait by @alexschneideman Slide Two: Designed by the amazing @carolmontpartstudio and featuring VALIE EXPORT’s iconic ‘The Birth Madonna ‘(1976) on the cover. This piece is also in the exhibition. 🙌 Seeing it IRL was amazing. Seeing it across the room from my own MOTHERLOAD work was thrilling.
