The Laramie Project is the true story of the aftermath following the 1998 murder of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard, that catalysed revolutionary LGBTQIA legislative change in America.
This Sydney reading was an Australian first – commemorating the 25th anniversary of the development of the play and International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The cast was joined by Dennis Shepard – father of the late Matthew – who delivered his powerful courtroom speech from the 1999 trial. The production aims to make people reflect on how far LGBTQIA rights have come, and how far we have yet to go.
An incredibly timely piece in an age where trans and gender diverse people, and the entire LGBTQIA community, is facing increasing attacks on our safety, rights, and health care.
