Benjamin Law Instagram – Ticking off an all-time bucket list item for Mum’s 70th birthday … BY TAKING HER ON THE FRICKIN’ GHAN.
Feeling damn lucky to travel close to 3000km through the heart of the continent on such an iconic railway, starting in Adelaide on Kaurna Country, then chasing sunrise at Marla on Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land, having stunning off-train nature experiences at Mparntwe (Alice Springs) and Katherine on Jawoyn Country, before finally pulling into Darwin on lush Larrakia Country.
It’s wild. You honestly can’t quite comprehend the scale of Australia until you experience it like this.
But what was really staggering for this daughter of a restaurateur (Mum) and son of a restaurateur (me) was the all-inclusive* wine list and menu of fine-dining quality local fare (think: crocodile dumplings, local barramundi, buffalo massaman curry, mango parfait) they served up every day. We’re still processing how these peeps make food this good on a moving vehicle.
Shout out to the entire Ghan crew who gave us the Gold Service (literally) treatment, especially Yohan, Rami, Darlene, Ralph and Imogen for taking extra special care of Mum.
And massive thanks to the utter legends at @journeybeyondrail for making a lifelong dream of Mum’s come true.
