First published in 1968, Sun Signs, was the first astrology book to hit the mainstream and, as the books current publisher modestly states, Linda brought metaphysical consciousness to millions of readers around the world for the first time.
Sun Signs made the New York Times bestseller list and its success spawned a wave of horoscopes in the dailies and women’s magazines.
Linda, who was also a writer, poet and radio host, went on to publish multiple astrology books. At last count there were 60 million copies of her books out there in the world…so not too shabby.
Linda’s real name was Mary Alice Kearney and she died, aged 70, in 1995.
Right onto the book itself….
With a foreword that gives a brief overview of how sun signs works, the real strength of ‘Sun Signs’ is the writing: easy to read, never dry and packed full of over-the-top analogies and turns of phrase.
It’s simple to follow structure and rolling style give it a narrative quality you can lose yourself in.
She doesn’t go too much into the practicalities of the astrology – the whys and wherefores but who cares when Linda can tell me about my dodgy ankles, ethereal nature and distant relationships.
To summarise:
Sun Signs is the ultimate classic. Are there more modern astrology books that delve deeper and look at your rising this and the moon of that, books that reference Harry Styles rather than Louis Pasteur? Yes, of course, and I’d like to hear your thoughts and recommendations about those but for me Linda Goodman is astrology’s Jilly Cooper – comforting, a little bit naughty, a little bit eccentric, essentially outdated but she creates a world I want to return to time and time again.
