Gyles Brandreth Instagram – KHALIL GIBRAN – THE PROPHET
This classic –part poetry, part philosophy, part manual for life – was first published in American in 1923. It may be over 100 years old but it remains as relevant today as it ever has been.
It is one of the best-selling books of all time and one of the most translated – having been published in over 100 languages.
It’s a beautiful blend of many different forms of spirituality and religious thinking taking the form of 26 prose poems each on a different subject- love, joy and sorrow, children, work, law, freedom and so on.
It has been endlessly quoted at weddings, funerals and christenings especially since its revival in the 1960s when its ideas struck a chord with the counter culture generation.
.
Gibran, a writer, poet and artist was born in the Lebanon in 1893 and emigrated to the States in 1895. He died in Manhattan in 1931 aged 48 and is buried at the Gibran Bshaari, Lebanon
I first came across this book as a teenager and loved it in that earnest “I’m the first person to ever discover this’ way teenagers do, as it’s my son’s 18th birthday today I gave him a copy.
It also got me thinking about how the books we read as teenagers stay with us for life.
Examples of a few I loved in that earnest teenage way…
On The Road – Jack Kerouac
The Electric Kool Aid Test – Tom Wolfe
The Rachel Papers – Martin Amis
The Secret History – Donna Tart
And many many more…
What about you? What books impacted you as teenager and have stayed with you ever since? Please post in comments – I’d genuinely love to know!
