Last week, as Mother’s Day approached, I had the incredible honor of receiving an honorary doctorate along with my mother at her alma mater, Talladega College. I’m not sure how rare mother/son honorary doctorates are, but it was amazing for us! This occasion holds a profound significance, as it underscores the invaluable influence my mother has had on my life. Dr. Marilyn Hill Harper is not just a trailblazer; she has been my guiding light. She wrote a book which gave me permission to write mine. She taught young people as a professor which showed me the value of starting my youth based foundation. She worked hard, which showed me what I was expected to do. All that she is, including her intelligence and courage in the face of sexism & racism, whether overt or subtle, have paved the way for my achievements. Her discipline, hard work, creativity, and desire to make the world better are nothing short of inspiring. So here’s to you, Mom—Happy Mother’s Day, Dr. Marilyn Hill Harper! Thank you for all you have done for me and our family! You are truly remarkable.
