Cudjo’s story can now be shared with younger readers. In her mission to stay authentic in telling Cudjo’s story, Zora Neale Hurston wrote the majority of Barracoon in the voice of Cudjo who spoke a vernacular of English which happens to sound a lot like the Creole I grew up speaking in my own birth country. As such, I found the book fascinating to read. My daughter loves hearing the language I grew up speaking, so I could not wait to get the adapted version of Barracoon by Ibram X Kendi for her. History told directly in the voice and language of one who lived it.
