Nina West Instagram – It’s Pride in Columbus and I am sitting here in some big gratitude for everyone who made today and this weekend possible over many, many years.
Last Sunday, as part of the month-long celebration of Pride in New York City, I was invited to host and participate in a celebration of LGBTQIA Ancestors and Elders. This event had incredible performances from @williamdusan and @lvalayil and speakers celebrating those who came before. The speakers included Randy Wicker, Rick Landman, Tanya, and Sister Rosetta Stoned. It was beautifully organized by @ryangrippi with some love and support from @akenny , and hosted by New York University. Even more thrilling and somber in this celebration of life, it was held at @stonewallnps 🌈
I was invited to perform and honor Howard Ashman. I sang a song Howard wrote with his longtime collaborator and friend @alanmenken , celebrating the lives of our lost generation to AIDS called “Sheridan Square” in Sheridan Square.
This little area is the very cornerstone of our movement, our suffering, and a symbol for our resistance and strength. To honor Howard in that place for this event and to also provide voice to so many who came before was an incredible honor.
