Nina West Instagram – Jack O’Brien is a teacher. I am not sure if he set out to do that in his lifetime, but I know that there are many students, like myself, who have had the great privilege to be enrolled in O’Brien U. When class has been in session, as it was last night during his wonderful speech, Jack engages you. He asks you to imagine a better world. He asks you to be present in your own truth. He asks you to stand witness to life and let it wash over you to better tell the story…whatever that story may be. He asks you to be present in YOUR story.
Don’t be a passenger, but rather drive forward. His work suggests that. He is playfully serious and passionately playful and dedicated to the whimsy and magic of the truth. I am so fortunate that my world collided with his and all of those wonderful, playful people who created Hairspray. I am so grateful he reaffirmed that this Ohio kid could make a life in the theatre, just like he, a Michigan kid, has.
And though he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award last night at @thetonyawards , the man is just getting started. Class is in session folks. Snag a seat if you can.
