Rankin Instagram – Björk was the first serious musical artist that I photographed. We’d been doing @Dazed & Confused for only three or four issues when we got the call from her record company, saying that she would like me to do a press session. This was my first proper session, so I was seriously nervous. As a way to protect myself, I took Björk to St. Albans Road, where I’d spent my teenage years — a place where I knew all of the locations inside out.
Björk was, thankfully, a gracious collaborator and guided me through my first proper commissioned session. She made me realize that I should always follow my own instincts and not be derivative. Fittingly, it is my images of @Bjork that have become some of my most iconic works, and which have set the blueprint for many of my shoots to come.
