“A Carved Stone”
from “Esperanto” (1985)
Composed for a performance by New York avant-garde choreographer Molissa Fenley.
Produced and performed by Sakamoto with contributions from Arto Lindsay and Japanese percussionist Yas-Kaz, “Esperanto” is a fascinating instrumental work.

“Musically, Sakamoto used a lot of sampling. There is a wide variety of music to choose from, but unlike what is known as hip-hop, the technique aims to be ‘ethno,’ even if it is techno. The concept of “Esperanto” has a strong element of ethnic musical primitivism.
The single that came out earlier also uses the same music and is more pop-like. “High-tech ethno-music”” that takes into account Debussy’s and Stravinsky’s ballet music, Satie’s theatre music and other lineages”
-(Excerpt from an album review in Steady Magazine’s October issue.)
Ryuichi often expressed, “I sometimes regret not pursuing the path I opened with Esperanto. If I had, I could’ve been a more interesting artist.”
