Shaun T Instagram – POLL: Did your parents read to you as a child? Parents often ask me and @scottphotobombs how we got our children to enjoy reading. While we don’t know if this will work for every family, I will give you our process.
1. We never missed a night of reading them a bedtime story from the day they got home from the NICU.
2. Even during non reading times either Scott and I or their grandparents @billblokker and @sueblokker would tell them elaborate stories to stimulate their brains.
3. When they were around 2.5 years old and started wanting toys from @target, we would take the opportunity to help them read the boxes of the actual toys they wanted.
4. Their nannies, @lil_deaun_13 and Mackenzie, would foster their reading, and Des really took the initiative to teach them daily starting around 4 years old.
5. While we never judge any parenting style, WE NEVER EVER TALKED TO THEM IN THAT FAMOUS BABY TALK VOICE! We always spoke to them as we spoke to other grownups!
6. We would read Marvel magazine articles to them. Even though there were words they didn’t understand, they really learned the art of “context clues” early.
7. If they were using their tablets and wanted to search for something, we would make them use the keyboard to type it in.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE!
While this may seem very time-consuming, it was actually fun, and they now willingly want to go to the bookstore more than they want to go to a toy store.
