Tarang Chawla Instagram – TALK IS CHEAP

My sister Nikita was murdered in 2015 in Melbourne. She was 23.

Since then, Victoria has had a Royal Commission into Family Violence. Political leaders have proudly said they fulfilled all of its recommendations.

I shared every detail of my sister Niki’s life and how the system failed her so that her vengeful and abusive partner could murder her.

I never thought I would use my law degree to make submissions to the government on how to prevent my sister’s murder.

All of this led to some important reforms in the specialist family violence courts, respectful relationships education and engagement with multicultural communities.

But the work is far from done and we are in a crisis. Men killing women went up 28 per cent from 2021-22 to 2023-23.

Literally during the time I recorded this interview, yet another Australian man killed a woman. At the rate we are going, we could hit 100 women killed this year alone.

And there is mass violence happening elsewhere, especially to women and girls and it’s almost exclusively being perpetrated by men.

I’m glad that more people are willing to talk about men’s violence, but for every family who’s lost a loved one, they don’t want more talk. They want meaningful commitments, fully funded services and leadership.

It might sound like a big ask to some, but if we’re going to claim to respect women, then it’s quite literally, the least we can do.
