i’d rather be with you right now than spend time writing a caption 👀 but i really do love (this photo of) us
Story time.. Since the Cannes Film Fest just wrapped up, lemme take y’all to 2008 when @thewesleychan & I went to Cannes for the first time, why, and how it connects to today… I was 23 and it was my first time going to Europe ever. We were a year out of college and @wongfupro was trying to make a movie. I talk about this experience a lot because it was my first taste of trying to make a “Hollywood movie” the traditional way. In 2008, no one cared that we had an emerging online audience, and warned us of casting Asians as leads. We were told to recast in order to pitch/sell a movie. We were told to go to the Cannes film fest to attract buyers and rub elbows with studio ppl. I always say that it was the ickiest I ever felt. (Although my future @bopomofocafe cofounder @ewangus did his best to help organize a productive and fun trip, complete with shots on the beach and flying @fareastmovement out to perform at fancy parties) The trip was eye opening and a huge learning experience. The whole process actually made me realize at the time that I didn’t wanna bend to Hollywood’s narrow minded standards and instead WF doubled down on building our YouTube community. Btw the movie never got made. We shot a spec trailer and in it, there was this helmet Wes’ brother @chosetec made. It’s always been in out office and most recently it made a cameo appearance, 15 yrs after its first use, in our recent sketch on @ryanbergara’s head. In case you were wondering where that thing came from. Bio link to watch the new vid! Thx for reading this far. With WF’s 20 yr anniversary coming up, should I share more throwback history??

☀️ summer solstice 🌱 strawberry moon 🌖 happy birthday 🍄 see you soon 🧋
Baba, I almost forgot to call you bc I was writing you a letter that I feel like I can never show you bc our call just reminded me that you’re so hurt that it’s impossible to imagine or handle how badly you hurt me. Happy Fathers Day, Baba. Yes, it’s certainly a beautiful boat.
It’s done. My dad started building this row boat at the start of the pandemic. In his tiny garage, he made it completely by hand and completely from scratch. This is the first time it went on water. And as I look at it and reflect, I feel torn with this thought: Is it enough to simply make something? Why must it be beautiful— What must it carry—How far must it go— Who must see it— to be at least acknowledged, and at best, honored? There is so much I love and hate about what this thing represents. Hate is a strong word. As is Love. Both of which are islands I find myself floating between in this boat that was not made from my hands, but from my blood.
It’s easy to be cool when the world sees you. It’s harder to be cool when the world doesn’t see you. What does that even mean? Let’s explore that idea and more at this year’s TranformAsian virtual conference on Saturday May 6th where I’ll be giving the keynote speech Registration is FREE! 🧠 @asianmentalhealthcollective 📷 @rev_sect

“LATELY” BEEN GRAPPLING WITH WHERE MY PLACE IS WITHIN / AMONG / AROUND EVERYTHING THAT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN MIGHT THINK I’M REFERRING TO “THAT” BUT IT COULD VERY WELL BE “THIS” > BECAUSE IT IS MAKE NO MISTAKE > THE AMBIGUITY IS SPECIFICITY— BECAUSE THE FEELING IS ALL ENCOMPASSING— IN FACT, IT IS NOT A MATTER OF “LATELY” BECAUSE IT ALWAYS HAS JUST “BEEN” THE LONGER “OFF” > THE “EASIER” TO STAY “OFF” BUT “RETURNING” TO SHARE ANYTHING IS NOT ANY MEASURE OF ITS SIGNIFICANCE IN RELATION TO WHAT HAS NOT BEEN SHARED THE FACT THAT I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO CLARIFY— IS THE VERY REASON I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO “RETURN” AND THE CYCLE CONTINUES > FOR BETTER > FOR WORSE I DO NOT EXPECT UNDERSTANDING— THESE WORDS ARE FOR ME > YOU JUST HAPPENED TO READ THEM— AND FOR THAT I THANK YOU

Fashionably Late — last minute fit I put together for this year’s #GoldGala. I got the traditional Tang top from a @lachinatown gift shop a few years ago but never found an opportunity to to wear it. Pant is of course @acronym.gmbh equipped with plenty of snack storage. On feet are Vapormax collab from @erlsn.acr and @nike. Up top is a @brixton field hat that I customized myself. Additional low profile storage provided by @dsptch Dyneema holsters. Lastly, my own EYE Frames designed with @jins.USA for 💯 vision and perspective. Thanks @goldhouseco for honoring me and @wongfupro since the beginning and giving me a chance to cosplay as myself amongst my friends and fellow inspirations ⚡️⚡️⚡️
