This was my first day on set. An hour earlier he had told me to “stay loose” – he was making some necessary script changes. I had spent the last week painstakingly memorizing my lines. I was *rigidly* prepared. I might have smiled and maybe accomplished a reassuring head nod, but I’m fairly certain my abject terror was painted all over my face. “Stay loose?” I was already drowning in imposter syndrome!
We were staring at some green taped X on a huge screen – the very intimidating Real Time Crime Center. He hated it. He didn’t want to be the guy barking orders and grandstanding and staring at big green x’s representing big scary scenes. He wanted to be Francis Xavier Reagan – the mess. The man.
For 14 years, I witnessed him turn what could have been a static police procedural into a living, breathing character drama.
He gave me permission – to find her, to discover her quirks and faults and flaws, to create the person under the perfection. To “stay loose.”
