The end of the story that didn’t fit into this already way too long post is that after the study ended, Peter was moved to another lab into a much smaller tank without sunlight; in the house with Margaret he’d had open space to move and lots of sun. He got so depressed he killed himself. Apparently dolphins can choose to stop breathing and just sink in their tanks. Margaret ended up moving back into the dolphin house — minus the flooding — and raised her family there.
