Hunting and habitat loss are the primary drivers of the decline, which puts these big cats firmly in the extinction crosshairs. For healthy gene flow and to help protect lions from hunting, these cats need vast areas in which to roam, something that is becoming scarcer as human development advances and critical habitats shrink.
