Heres how Rio Tinto is bullying their way into Serbia. They’ve released what they called an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) without consulting the public and without regulatory oversite.
To put it simply they’re bullying and buying their way back into a country that does not want them! Perfect ambassadors of colonialism in the 21st century.
For the nerds out there – here’s why that’s a problem. According to EU regulation, an Environmental Impact Assessment EIA has multiple steps – all involving public participation. Screening, scoping, and Assessment Proper. These stages all involve public participation and stakeholder involvement.
The study Rio released is NOT THIS but it’s being promoted as such. They’ve done their own private behind closed doors study using scientists who they won’t reveal the names of.
Here’s the rub – company at any moment can prepare and release a document called Environmental Impact Study (EIS) even if no Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is going on, but usually they are very secretive about these – as Rio has been here. They use the existence of the EIS document to make it look as they are serious and environmemtally responsible. And we believe Rio Tinto is using this to try to apply for strategic project funding within the EU…
