some of you may already know this story, but when i was 21, not too long before i booked riverdale, i told my agent at the time, an iconic woman named bonnie shumofsky, that i wanted to change my last name to something more “ambiguous.” i was worried that my latin last name was holding me back from booking roles. as a brazilian-american who spoke portuguese instead of spanish, it didn’t feel like the industry had a place for me. i was either not latina enough (by their definition) or not american enough. fortunately bonnie was quick to shut that idea down. she reminded me that my last name is what made me unique, and that being brazilian-american was my superpower. so thank you bonnie for saving me from what could have been a huge mistake.
the fact that i now have a film coming out that celebrates this part of my identity in the most artful, cinematic way is beyond my wildest dreams. but aside from the cultural backdrop, the rom-com structure, and the musical language, this is a coming-of-age story about finding your path and learning how to love yourself above all else. there truly is something for everyone. i hope you love it as much as we loved making it ♥️

MÚSICA on @primevideo
As a first-generation Brazilian American, @camimendes always wanted to bring Brazilian American stories to screen, but hadn’t quite figured out how—until @rudymancuso’s coming-of-age musical, Música, came into the picture. “It’s not a traditional musical. We keep calling it a non-musical musical… Not only is this a Brazilian American film, but it’s such a unique and interesting film outside of it being a Brazilian American film. I love that we got to be represented in this really beautiful, cinematic way,” she says of the project, which she both stars in and serves as a producer. We discuss her career post-Riverdale era, embracing her Brazilian culture, and more at the link in our bio.
