Did you know:

1:Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory of India, consisting of 36 islands, located in the Arabian Sea.

2:.It is home to the only coral atoll in India, known as the Minicoy Island. An atoll is a ring-shaped island, including a coral rim that encircles a lagoon.Most of the approximately 440 atolls in the world are in the Pacific Ocean.

3: Lakshadweep is a popular destination for water sports like snorkeling, scuba diving, and kayaking.

4: Kavaratti, the capital of Lakshadweep, is famous for its beautiful mosques and serene lagoons. The Muslim population of Lakshadweep have a distinct cultural heritage.

5:The island of Minicoy is famous for its boat-building tradition. Incidentally, this is where the Jahadhoni, a traditional race boat, originates from. In fact, during the annual National Minicoy Fest, skilled oarsmen from all over Lakshadweep compete in spectacular boat races.

6: The islands are well connected by regular flights from Kochi. Helicopter transfer is available from Agatti to Kavaratti throughout the year.

7: The name Lakshadweep in Malayalam and Sanskrit means ‘a hundred thousand islands’.

8: The islands of present-day Lakshadweep were first mentioned by a Greek sailor in the 1st century CE as a source of tortoise shell.

9: Residents of the islands staged an uprising in 1545 against the Portuguese. Following the uprising successive bibis (female rulers) and their husbands ruled the islands until control of the northern group of islands, the Amindivis, passed to Tippu Sultan, the sultan of Mysore (now Karnataka), on the mainland, in the 1780s.
