Daisy Ridley Instagram – “I realized a few months ago that things I’ve done are connected to women who are striving for something and are also outcasts in some way. But as you say, it’s all for different reasons. One, they’re struggling with how to connect. Two, they’ve been pushed into choosing isolation because they’re serving their husband over themselves, and Trudy’s just ahead of her own time.
I wanted Young Woman and the Sea to be a love story between these sisters. Trudy’s sister, Meg, has to do the things that Trudy doesn’t want to do. She has to marry the guy. She has to stay at home. She also has to work in the butcher’s shop. In some ways, her journey is just as difficult, if not more difficult, than Trudy’s. Even though what she’s doing is so out of the realm of things she thought could be possible and what people would’ve expected of a woman of that time. She’s still allowed to do it by a lot of people.”
