Daniella Rabbani Instagram – Happy birthday to the most gregarious and engaging Abbaleh of mine! Growing up he and my mother would stage elaborate productions every Friday night. He’d dress up as if he was meeting royalty, go to synagogue and pick up anyone in need of a meal and a warm embrace. The doors were always open. Once at the table my father would sing and sing and my mother would offer dish after dish. We’d get to know our guests, people who were strangers minutes earlier- family now. He’s still this way: get into a cab or an elevator with him and he’s the first to strike up a conversation. The first to flirt. The first to connect beyond the surface. He came to this country with less than nothing but his talent and work ethic. A belief in himself that was unmatched. And with his hands, he created beautiful jewelry that graced magazines and department stores. He is the reason I sing, why I believe in the power of art and conversation. He’s the one to exclaim “brava!” and start the standing ovation. The one at the stage door with flowers. He is singular in his ability to make the mundane holy. ((And he’s MY dad. Lucky me)).
