Deborah Ayorinde Instagram – “To be surrounded by powerful Black women in this process, it means a lot. There’s a level of safety that I think I didn’t realise I needed”.
In a play written by a Black woman, Alice Childress, directed by a Black woman, Monique Touko and with Deborah Ayorinde herself starring alongside Bethan Mary-James, Diveen Henry and Lachele Carl, @itsdeborah finds safety in this space, as she prepares for her professional stage debut for Wedding Band at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre.
We continue our conversation with Deborah, discussing the merits of acting on stage, the comfort of Alice’s writing and the importance of looking after yourself.
Wedding Band opens on 31 May at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre – tickets from £10, head to lyric.co.uk for more information.
Remember, for all things Black theatre (we’re talking discounts, recommendations, interviews and reviews) it’s the therendition.co.uk.
