Deborah Ayorinde Instagram – “To be surrounded by powerful Black women in this process, it means a lot. There’s a level of safety that I think I didn’t realise I needed”.⁣

In a play written by a Black woman, Alice Childress, directed by a Black woman, Monique Touko and with Deborah Ayorinde herself starring alongside Bethan Mary-James, Diveen Henry and Lachele Carl, @itsdeborah finds safety in this space, as she prepares for her professional stage debut for Wedding Band at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre.⁣

We continue our conversation with Deborah, discussing the merits of acting on stage, the comfort of Alice’s writing and the importance of looking after yourself.⁣

Wedding Band opens on 31 May at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre – tickets from £10, head to lyric.co.uk for more information.⁣

Remember, for all things Black theatre (we’re talking discounts, recommendations, interviews and reviews) it’s the therendition.co.uk.⁣
