Hıdırellez, known as Ederlezi in Christian communities, is a deeply spiritual spring festival observed across the Balkans and Turkey. Honoring the prophets Hızır (Hıdır) and İlyas (Elijah), it falls on May 5th.
During this sacred time, believers gather outdoors, immersed in prayer, music, and dance, seeking blessings for the year ahead. It’s a moment of profound renewal, where aspirations whispered on Hıdırellez are believed to resonate with divine favor.
In Bulgaria and North Macedonia, where it’s celebrated as Ederlezi or Đurđevdan, homes and streets bloom with flowers, echoing the shared cultural tapestry and the timeless message of spring’s awakening.
