This horse keeps me in my honest place. She is so present, so in her skin and without saying a word, she tells me everything she needs and invites me to listen. Even in the times I haven’t heard her, she has shown up for me. She had been a career polo horse, imported from Argentina, who had run like the wind, while her body was in pain. A stoic, introverted giant who came to me with a lot of emotional and physical baggage. She wouldn’t let me physically close, I couldn’t touch her face or her ears for a year but I felt how deeply she wanted to bond and be understood. Her aloofness triggered me constantly but we never gave up learning to communicate. She wanted friendship, a soft place to land, not another “job” that hurt her body. She just kept asking me to listen, so I did and what she taught me about how we carry trauma changed my life. I stopped taking from her and instead allowed her to give. In her I learned the difference. She came to me 11 years ago and she’s 31 years old now and greets me daily with a happy heart and a loud neigh.
It took this older, wiser soul to show me where in my body I was afraid and how I was carrying it. It took this older, wiser soul allowing me to help her through her pain, to show me exactly where I was in pain and needed to heal myself. And it took this partnership to be shown that great love isn’t found in “feelings”: it’s found in the daily being and doing of patience, commitment, empathy, compassion and willingness to grow with another, even when it’s not convenient, fun or exciting.
