Emily Swallow Instagram – Many of you have been following the story of the young foundling Spencer Thorsland, who has been an example of courage, strength and faith in his struggle with cancer. As you know, he recently transitioned to hospice care. His story has given me a chance to highlight the grace and kindness of many people, and this week’s #thisisthewaywednesday I want to tell you about my friend Dimas De La Cruz and @originalfunko. Spencer LOVES Funkos and has quite the collection, and he wanted to make a Funko of himself to give to his family. Funko has the option to “Pop Yourself” on their website, but the limit is three per order and you have to pay for each one. I messaged Dimas, a producer I’d met while working on Funko’s Fun TV simply to see if he knew how to get around that limit and pay for more, and Dimas one-upped me. He invited me to come into the Hollywood store on a day when he’d be up from San Diego shooting content for the company, and said I could build Spencer’s Funko right there, make a video for him since he couldn’t be there himself, AND that they’d produce as many as he wanted, all for free. Y’all, Dimas is a busy, busy guy keeping lots of balls in the air for Funko. But he didn’t hesitate in offering to help out and made his trip up to LA longer just so we could get this done for Spencer. And while we’re talking about it, @originalfunko and their sister company @loungefly have both provided products for free for our @voicesagainstcancer honored kids—I have been blown away by their generosity over the past couple of years. It is all done quietly and efficiently- there’s no showiness or bragging involved. Is there a company you want to highlight who walks The Way? I tend to focus on individual efforts on Wednesdays, but I think it’s important to remember that even big ol’ fancy corporations are built by individual people, and those people can do a lot of good.
