I now have over 40,000.00$ in debts because my country of Canada doesn’t recognize my illness as one… And I need another surgery in August.
At 44, I went from being a very active professional wrestler who was training 5-6 days a week to barely being able to walk within months.
Manual lymphatic drainage, wrapping and bandaging, compression garments and pressotherapy all can help living comfortably with the disease… But most of these are also not covered. There also comes a point where surgery is the only option left, which is my case.
Lipedema IS NOT obesity. It is lightly known but heavily felt. It is painful and destroys all quality of life. It is resistant to nutritional intervention, exercise, elevation, diuretics, and bariatric surgery. It can lead a very healthy woman to the wheelchair.
Our healthcare system is not the best but it’s always been reliable in taking care of you when you need it, without sending you an horrendous bill after. Well, we pay a good chunk of it on our taxes so why can’t we get the help we need?
There is no mandated formal training for lipedema as part of the standard medical curriculum, which places both clinicians and patients at a significant disadvantage regarding the diagnosis and management of this disease. It is estimated to affect 11% of individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB).
This is simply unacceptable.
Please share so that Prime Minister @justinpjtrudeau can witness the physical, mental and financial stress this ILLNESS brings to the female citizens of Canada.
