Giovannie Espiritu

Giovannie Espiritu Instagram – In the midst of the events of the last week, I was featured in Forbes. ⭐️

“As a filmmaker, writer, actor, and creative wearing many hats, navigating the gig economy means building multiple streams of income. Passive income sources like residuals and backend points are essential, providing a financial cushion that sustains and fuels my creativity between active projects,” offers Giovannie Espiritu, Telly-winning Director and Writer.

… of course I didn’t say that my residual checks are sometimes less than the postage used to send ‘em 🤓.

It feels a little surreal. As a single mom with a kiddo in college and a gig-worker navigating the unpredictable landscape of creative work, it feels both ironic and aspirational. I have to admit, I struggle a bit with the assumptions that come with this kind of recognition although I know that accolades and press increase trust with the decision makers and gate keepers.

Because of my work, I’ve been fortunate to find myself in spaces of privilege, even though I constantly feel like an outsider/imposter. I’m still Tondo-born and Bay-Area bred. My journey in the biz has been marked by fighting for a seat and creating space at the table, especially when it comes to stories that investors don’t believe will yield a return. This is despite a McKinsey report showing that not championing POC stories is leaving $30 billion on the table. Filipinos, the third largest Asian American demographic in America, are part of this untapped potential.

Thank you to everyone who supports my work and believes in the importance of diverse voices in the arts. We can and need to keep pushing the needle forward.
