Yesterday the Senate passed C-226, Canada’s first Environmental Racism bill—thank you for helping to make this happen!
Your actions made a difference. You sent letters, you shared social media posts. And the federal government listened. Thousands of us joined forces to build public awareness and pressure on addressing the disproportionate harms faced by frontline Indigenous and racialized people and communities. From Aaamjiwnaang to Shelbourne to Fort Chipewyan, we must do more to identify and redress these harms.
Thank you to Dr. Ingrid Waldron (@enrichproject) for leading this push, to former MP Lenore Zann for the first version of this Bill, to MP Elizabeth May for taking this forward in this session of Parliament, and to Senator Mary Jane McCallum for leading the push in the Chamber.
The real work of addressing and preventing these harmful exposures and injustices begins now, but let’s all take a moment to celebrate the effort and dedication that got us here.
