No but seriously, I get it, we both paint people of color and we do look like we belong at the same family reunion and although we actually are not related, nor the same person or artist, you have truly become like a sister to me. Behind the curtain of our lives, I have watched you navigate your career and well being with incredible resilience and grace. I have the privilege of “painting with you” as we chat on the phone about everything from which paint brushes we’re loving at the moment, how to navigate the healthcare system, to our hopes and dreams.
Your fight, determination, and perseverance is infectious – and I can say you truly practice what you preach. Laying the foundation for us as black women American painters to be seen as the complex individuals we are.
This honor is a symbol of the impact you’ve made (and will continue to make) in the lives of so many. From the artist watching Art 21 to having your own Art 21 to being honored here tonight at the Art 21 gala – you’ve modeled how important it is to believe in yourself even when no one is watching.”
