Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a holiday that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and proclaimed freedom for the enslaved people in accordance with the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln two and a half years earlier.

Juneteenth carries historical significance as it represents the official end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, it was not enforced in many Confederate states until after the end of the Civil War in April 1865. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the long-delayed liberation of enslaved African Americans and the ongoing struggle for equality and civil rights. It has become a day to celebrate Black history, heritage, and achievements, as well as to promote education and reflection on the legacy of slavery and the pursuit of freedom. In recent years, efforts to recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday have gained momentum, with it being officially designated as a federal holiday in the United States in 2021.
