Home is not just a place, it’s a feeling. For me, stepping onto the ice is like going home. A sanctuary of sorts. Every time I hear my blades carving through a clean sheet of ice, I’m immediately transported to a place of peace, where time slows and the world fades away. There’s also a nostalgic feeling of going back to my childhood when life revolved around practices and competitions.
It’s funny, when I was a little girl, I never understood why there were so many adult skaters who came to the rink, eagerly hopping on the ice after my friends and fellow competitors finished our freestyle sessions. To be brutally honest, as a teenager, I thought the adults were weird and wasting their time because they weren’t doing anything significant (in my eyes 😉).
Now that I’m one of those adults who steps on the ice to simply skate for the shear joy of moving my body, I finally understand why the adults skaters of years past took the time to skate.
Skating is truly one of the only activities that immediately puts me into a state of flow, a state of peace where I don’t worry about the past or fear the future…
