Mary Chieffo Instagram – My Georgia Mama. So lucky to have had a rambunctious whirlwind of a mama who made sure my brother Bubba and I had every possible opportunity in life. A complicated, brilliant, loving, hilarious, cute, sweet, supportive, party-loving, creative, determined to get all of us to-do-it-her-way Southern Belle who loved her imagination more than real life. She saw what we could be and made sure we saw it too. She was adored by my daddy no matter what crazy scheme she dragged him into. She was what used to be known as a yellow dog Democrat whose activism began as she waved a little American flag when FDR drove by her elementary school on his way to Warm Springs, GA. She was an egalitarian who campaigned for Adlai Stephenson, John F. Kennedy, and the progressive leadership North Carolina enjoyed in the sixties. She greatly admired Martin Luther King, Andrew Young and Julian Bond. She wanted to be rich and famous but she also gave and gave and gave. She believed in trickle up not trickle down. As corny as it sounds, and somehow surprisingly, I think her favorite role was being a grandmother to her precious @marythechief She expected a lot from all of us, sometimes more from me than I could handle. We had terrible fights and sweet, loving make-ups. I wouldn’t trade her as a mother for any other woman I’ve ever known. Happy Mother’s Day, Sara Elizabeth Hayes Grant, “Sister,” “Libbie,” “Libba,” Mama. I miss you every day and will love you forever. | Posted on 13/May/2024 00:16:28
