Nandita Das Instagram – Better late than never…Happy Pride Month!
My journey of consciously engaging with issues of LGBTQIA began with Fire, when this vocabulary to describe the queer community didn’t even exist! It was my first film as an actor that I simply stumbled upon. And I am so glad I did. It made me sensitive towards all that we perceive as the ‘other’.
Fire was one of the first mainstream films that portrayed a love relationship between two women in a sensitive manner. Over the years I have heard all kinds of responses, ranging from compliments for being part of a bold, ahead-of-its-time film to accusing me of making all women lesbians! My resolve to be an ally has only grown stronger.
While the fight continues, even after 28 years, the discourse around the issue has significantly evolved since then. There is still a lot needed to bring about greater awareness and overcome deep rooted prejudice. Fire triggered something important and brought the issue into the public domain.
Thanks to Fire, I evolved as a person. It helped me look at the issue with greater depth and sensitivity. It was a landmark film. Glad I was a part of it.
