Peaches Instagram – Words by @candicebreitz All eyes on Rafah, as Israel’s disproportionate and cruel war of retribution (led by a hard-right war cabinet that openly espouses genocidal rhetoric) continues to massacre, maim and starve tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians. A tiny minority of those who are being hit are Hamas militants. Most of this asymmetrical war’s victims are displaced, defenceless, suffering and traumatised people who literally have nowhere to go. Over half of Gazan homes have been razed to the ground. The bulk of Gazan civil infrastructureβ€”hospitals, schools, universities, graveyards, places of worship, cultural and community facilitiesβ€”has been flattened. Over 14,000 children have been killed. If you are a German/American taxpayer who is pretending not to notice that your tax contributions are funding the ongoing nightmare, take a moment to consider what it means to be complicit in a humanitarian catastrophe of this scale.

There are inevitably those who will pop up to dismiss the mass death that we are witnessing, to insist that Israel has the right to defend itself. The question, of course, is how. The question, of course, is at what costβ€”present and futureβ€”not only to Palestinians and Israelis, but also to the dwindling prospect of a peace process:

Ongoing bombing will not bring back the Israelis who died brutally at the hands of Hamas on 7 October, or secure the safe return of Israeli hostages. Continuing to mercilessly pummel Gaza can only further amplify antisemitism and Islamophobia worldwide and undermine faith in humanitarian law. Rather than cementing its credibility as β€˜the only democracy in the region,’ Israel’s bloody campaign of vengeance has dramatically undermined the nation’s global standing. Palestinians haveβ€”and will continueβ€”to bear the most severe and horrific consequences. Those who are cheering on the bloodshed in the belief that the world will be a safer place for global Jewry once the dust settles, are living in a state of delusion and deep-seated denial.

Listen to the students. It may be tempting to demonize them now. When has a student movement that protested the excesses of war, ever been wrong?

PERMANENT CEASEFIRE NOW
