Randa Abdel-Fattah Instagram – On June 20th, this graffiti was found in the men’s restroom on the ground floor of Mahmoud’s Hall at the University of Melbourne. This despicable act clearly gives praise to Brenton Tarrant, a white, #Australian far-right terrorist who—in the space of 36 minutes shot dead 51 Muslim worshippers inside two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.
This is not an isolated incident; graffiti targeting Muslims has repeatedly appeared across Melbourne, underscoring a pervasive threat. The fact that the perpetrator chose Mahmoud’s Hall, a site known for pro-Palestinian protest, was clearly intentional. The frequency and boldness of these acts are a clear indication that hate-filled individuals feel emboldened and unchecked. The University’s persistent inaction has essentially given these bigots a green light to spread their vile messages. This is a damning reflection on the institution’s priorities and its apparent indifference to the safety and dignity of its Muslim students and staff.
This is a direct attack not only on Muslims but on the entire community, creating an atmosphere of profound fear and insecurity. University of Melbourne, it is imperative that you take immediate and decisive action to address and eradicate this hatred, and investigate this incident immediately. Enough is enough!
