Sanjana Sanghi Instagram – Of Course the theme for this #WorldEnvironmentDay is land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. This is an urgent call for individual and collaborative action. In this UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration we can and will restore the degraded land on our shared planet 🌏
DYK that nearly 75% of the earth’ s surface has been altered by human activity!
In India too, between 2015 to 2019, over 30.51 million hectares of reported land was degraded. This data furnished by United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) indicates that 9.45 per cent of India’s landmass was degraded as of 2019. UNCCD compares the size of this degraded land to 43 million football pitches.
Climate change, urbanization, deforestation, pollution and degradation of land by human activities are also endangering the ecosystems which nourish and sustain us with food, water and air. A world with depleting water sources, dwindling food production, water- and food-borne diseases as well as respiratory issues is not sustainable and will become increasingly uninhabitable.
Each one of us can play a role in growing forests, reviving water sources, and restoring soils. More than 2 billion hectares of degraded landscapes have
potential for restoration which in turn will create habitats for wildlife havens, counter the extinction crisis, mitigate climate change and protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather events.
Our country is committed as well to achieving land degradation neutrality and the restoration of 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. Together and individually, we can scale up ecosystem restoration efforts to rewild our forests,
rewet our marshes, revive our soils and make peace with the Earth that we call our home 🦋
Every individual action to protect and restore health of our land and natural resources will count. Join us, we are #GenerationRestoration 🕊️✨
